The debts that the government and municipalities have to citizens and businesses have increased in the third quarter of 2023 by 15 million euros. The data of the Ministry of Finance show that the arrears amount to 195 million euros.
The increase in liabilities has affected both parties, both the government and the municipalities, where investments in public works hold the largest share of the debt stock. The latter amount to 118 million euros and constitute about 60% of the total liabilities.
In the second place, the court decisions for unfair dismissals or business complaints are listed, which are calculated at nearly 37 million euros.
The rest of the money that needs to be liquidated is related to social security, goods, maintenance and personal income.
The increase in debts in the June-September period seems to be closely related to the local elections on May 14, the phase when investments increase for the electoral effect.
The reflections of the Ministry of Finance show that the objective of reducing or erasing arrears, especially from the local government, is still far away.
