1,879 couples have turned to the court of Durrës in the last 3 years to end their marriage. The figures provided by “Euronews Albania” reflect an increasing trend year after year, since only in 2023, 717 cases with the object “Marriage resolution” were registered in the court.
“Mainly in the 90s, we had 9 divorces for every 100 marriages, while in recent years the statistics of marriage settlements are very high, 24-26% for every 100 marriages. So, practically, with these numbers, we are in 1 marriage settlement for every four marriages that have taken place” – said Mirjam Reçi.
According to the court, women are the ones who initiate divorce, while young couples with few years of marriage predominate. The reasons, according to experts, are several.
“In Albanian families, the husband migrates and this distance, even physical, makes the family unstable. Other reasons may be related to the economic independence of women” – emphasized Mirjam Reçi.
“A woman, who feels economically independent, can reason that when a marriage has lost its function, they can divorce more easily,” added Reçi, among other things.
Children are the most affected among this, which brings an increasing risk for the breakdown of the family concept in the future, which may not be too distant.
“It is a trauma that lasts in time to become a post-trauma, if it is not treated properly by the family and the community”, said Afërdita Mehmeti, expert on divorce issues at the Durrës Court.
Experts claim that the violence and trauma that children go through in the family damages them psychologically, according to them this is an effect that lasts over time and is transmitted to later generations, producing the model they have received.
