The President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, announced on Friday that, in cooperation with the US Department of State, a Regional Center of Excellence for Women, Peace, and Security will be established in Kosovo.

Speaking in Pristina at the regional conference “Parliamentarism and Resolution 1325: Perspectives from the Western Balkans”, Osmani emphasized that Kosovo has been one of the four selected countries for this center.

“The opening of this center in Kosovo is part of the US strategy for women, peace, and security, as well as part of the US national action plan,” said Osmani.

Osmani did not provide details about the center or the date of its construction, but emphasized that it expects the center to help consolidate new partnerships in Kosovo and the region.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Kosovo Assembly, Glauk Konjufca, stated that the agenda for women, peace, and security aims primarily to position women as equal partners in all areas related to peace and security.

“In this regard, Kosovo is a good example of commitment to fulfilling global agendas, despite often being limited in voicing our work in these bodies of which we are not yet members,” he said.

According to him, the inclusion of women in peace and security processes is a prerequisite for sustainable peace and democracy.

“Today we have a large number of women involved in politics, including in the justice and security sectors, although their number is far from being equal to the number of men, and this needs to change,” Konjufca said.

The United Nations Security Council adopted Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security on October 31, 2000.

This resolution encourages UN member states to ensure greater representation of women at all decision-making levels in national, regional, and international institutions and in mechanisms for conflict prevention, management, and resolution.
