The President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, has stated that she is convinced that Ukraine will one day recognize Kosovo’s independence.
She made these statements at the beginning of the “Ukraine – Southeast Europe” summit being held in the capital of Albania.
The summit is expected to discuss security issues and support for Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression.
Osmani has emphasized that during the summit, she will speak about the concrete steps Kosovo has taken to condemn the invasion initiated by Moscow in Ukraine in 2022.
At the outset, the president was asked if she would seek recognition of Kosovo’s statehood from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
“These are bilateral issues; we have always made such a request and will continue to do so, with full understanding that Ukraine is in an extraordinary situation, in a state of war, fighting for its freedom and independence,” Osmani said.
The summit in Tirana is organized by the Prime Minister of Albania, Edi Rama.
Earlier during the day, Rama and Zelensky signed the “Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation”.
The Prime Minister’s Office of Albania has stated that “the treaty serves to consolidate friendship between the two countries and peoples, through the expansion and strengthening of cooperation in various fields of mutual interest”.
Several leaders of Southeast Europe are participating in the summit in Tirana.
According to the agenda, Rama and Zelensky are expected to deliver opening speeches and then hold a closed-door meeting.
The summit will conclude with their participation in a media conference.
The war in Ukraine began on February 24, 2022.
Russian President Vladimir Putin calls the war a “special military operation” to demilitarize Ukraine.
The West has responded to Russia by hitting its economy with tough sanctions.
As a result of the war, thousands have died, and millions have been displaced from their homes.
