The National Historical Museum will be closed for 4 years. The most important cultural institution and one of the main destinations for a tourist visiting Tirana will close its doors from March 15 to March 15, 2028.
The Museum’s official Facebook account states that the reason for the closure is reconstruction, but without providing any other clarifications.
Dear managers of tourist agencies, managers of cultural tours and other interested parties, we inform you that: In the framework of the implementation of the project “Restoration, reconstruction and museumization of the National History Museum, Tirana”, the National History Museum will be closed to visitors for the period March 15, 2024 until March 15, 2028.’- the National Museum announces.
Managers of the institution have not clarified how the historical objects will be preserved during the 4-year restoration and whether they will be moved to other buildings.
Currently, this institution has a commanding director, Entela Cipa, after the resignation of Dorian Koci as the head of the National Historical Museum.
A part of the national museum, specifically the 42-year-old mosaic, completed the restoration two years ago. Its restoration cost 1 million euros and was realized with the funds of the European Union.
The National Historical Museum was inaugurated on October 28, 1981 and is the largest museum institution in Albania.
Meanwhile, art critics have repeatedly raised controversies about the conditions and condition of the museum in the pavilions.
With the closing of the museum, some of the cultural institutions are no longer available to the public, including the Art Gallery, the Puppet Theater also under reconstruction.
