Gjirokastër in Albania: a city with a charm you don’t see every day

If the desire to escape to a mythical setting beckons you, a little getaway to the city of Gjirokastër in Albania will do you a world of good. This city sits atop the Gjerë mountain in the south of the country. This municipality is characterized by its houses with overhanging structures typical of the Balkans, which is one of the reasons it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2005. According to UNESCO’s description, “the historical city of Gjirokastra is a rare example of a well-preserved Ottoman town, built by large estate-owning farmers around the 13th-century citadel”.

The small houses dotting the city resemble clustered little fortresses. In addition to its raw beauty, the city is considered one of the most perched in the world, so walks there are very pleasant, but not without effort. Moreover, it has numerous cultural and historical buildings.

Must-see spots in Gjirokastër

In the city, you can find many must-see sites such as the Zekate House as well as some museums that recount the city’s glorious past. It is impossible to miss the Citadel dating back to the 13th century, which was transformed into a prison during the communist period.

On-site, you will also find a bazaar dating back to the 17th century and a university where some courses are taught in Greek to maintain the influences that have marked this place. This city with historic buildings also offers many ancient religious buildings such as an old mosque dating from the time of the Ottoman Empire, a few ancient churches, and a large Basilica located not far from the city.

Why a stay in this city is so advantageous?

In addition to historical excursions, breathtaking views, and life in the heart of nature, life in this area of the Balkans is very inexpensive. Hotels offering a sunset view from the mountain are therefore very accessible, averaging between 40 and 75€ per person for 5 nights. These very advantageous rates also include breakfast and some local dishes.

From the shore of Saranda, it is possible to contemplate the beauties of the island of Corfu. Indeed, this essential Greek island is located not far from Gjirokastër. Due to its high location, this city has the most striking views in Europe.

A gastronomy like few others

In addition, the food there is particularly abundant. Gjirokastër is at the crossroads of different culinary cultures, so its cuisine is rich and unique. It is influenced by its Ottoman heritage with Mediterranean influences, but also by the know-how of the dominant mountains in the Balkans.

However, Gjirokastër has its own specialties that cannot be tasted anywhere else. In the highlands, the kitchens offer qifqi, a dish made of fried rice and meatballs. Traditional dishes from the region also offer soups as comforting as the places. These are rich in flavors and condiments, such as chicken soup with wheat and spices.

It is therefore a destination worth visiting for its unbeatable prices, unique spots, and gastronomy that makes the taste buds salivate.
