Prime Minister Edi Rama recently participated in the Ministerial Conference of the European Higher Education Area, which is being held in Tirana. In front of the representatives from the European Union, Rama shared the idea of creating an international organization similar to NATO, but with the main focus on education.
The head of government said that democratic values are increasingly threatened by extremist forces, so a new generation must be prepared to face these forces in the future and support the values of liberal democracy.
“What I will say will be taken by many as a provocation, but I think the time has come for us to build a NATO for education. We need an organization similar to NATO, but for education. What we see even more is that hatred and disagreement about democratic institutions is increasing more and more in all corners of the globe. It is based on a system that feeds this thing.
I am not sure if our system of resistance to this is the same as the one that uses the pride that we have or the commitment of young people to democratic values. If in our imagination we could think about confrontations of young generations from both sides, we are afraid that our generation is more unprepared to face the other side, in case it comes down to fighting for the values that our world has and we have worked hard and are being challenged by the growing force. We have to decide how we will deal with the past and the future”, said Rama.
