Two vehicles with Serbian license plates were burned on Saturday morning in North Mitrovica, the Kosovo Police announced.

The Deputy Director of the Kosovo Police for the North Region, Veton Elshani, told Radio Free Europe that the police have not identified any suspects for this incident, but the prosecutor has opened this case as “arson”.

“A Skoda Octavia car with Serbian license plates was completely engulfed in fire and this fire also engulfed the Mercedes C class car, also with Serbian license plates,” said Elshani.

He said that the incident happened on “Kral Petri” street in North Mitrovica at 02:25 on June 1.

“Firefighters came to the scene and localized the fire. The fire expert and the supervising investigator notified the prosecutor, who instructed that the case be initiated as ‘arson,'” said Elshani.

In the north of Kosovo, inhabited by a majority of Serbs, cases of burning cars and properties have also been recorded in the past.

At the beginning of April, a member of the Kosovo border police had his car burned in North Mitrovica.

In March, two burnings of Serb property were recorded in Kosovo. A bar, owned by the vice-mayor of Zveçan, Natasha Tomaniq, burned down on March 8. She, and security authorities, said the arson was suspected to be deliberate.

Meanwhile, on March 24, a building owned by Nenad Radosavlevic, director of the Directorate for Sports, Youth and Culture in the municipality that operates according to the Kosovo system, was burned down. Radosavlević told Radio Free Europe that he believes the arson was intentional and that the motive was political, writes REL.

The trend of burning cars was especially current at the end of 2022 and during 2023, when the process of re-registration of cars with Kosovo license plates took place. For this reason, unknown persons burned several cars with RKS (Republic of Kosovo) license plates.
