The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, has said that it is necessary to allow access to all electoral material of repeated local elections in some parts of Serbia, held on June 2.
“Everyone who wants to review everything should be allowed, so everything should be transparent. You can count them 100 times, however you want. Of course, there are no irregularities”, said Vučić in a TV appearance on Radio Television of Serbia.
The President of Serbia has responded to the suspicions of the opposition that the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) has stolen the local elections, held in 89 cities and provinces in Serbia. The opposition organized protests on Tuesday in Belgrade and Nis, with the request to have access to the election material.
Vučić said that it would be good for the new leadership to start working in Belgrade as soon as possible, since, according to him, 750,000 people voted out of a total of 1.6 million inhabitants.
“SNS won convincingly in Belgrade and Novi Sad”, claimed Vučić.
Parliamentary and local elections in Serbia were held last December, but their results were disputed in 88 cities, municipalities and districts, where they were repeated on June 2. In most of them, including the second largest city of Serbia, Novi Sad, the SNS won.
However, organizations that monitored the election reported a range of irregularities, including vote buying or double registration of voters. The SNS has dominated Serbian politics for more than a decade.
Serbia has been a candidate to join the EU since 2012, but its progress towards the bloc seems slow.
