The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, welcomed the director of the Srebrenica Genocide Memorial Center, Emir Sulljagić, in a meeting on Monday in Pristina, where he called for Serbia to confront its past, his Office said in a statement.

“Kurti welcomed Sulljagić to Kosovo on the 25th anniversary of the liberation of our country and the end of the ethnic cleansing and genocide of Serbia in Kosovo,” said an announcement from Kurti’s Office.

On Monday, Kosovo marked the 25th anniversary of the end of the war and the liberation of the country.

“It was said that for peace in the Balkans, Serbia must face its past and be held responsible for the crimes, massacres and genocides committed, and that those responsible for the crimes committed during the war be brought to justice,” according to the announcement.

Sulljagić is a survivor of this genocide committed by Serbian forces in July 1995 in Srebrenica, in which over 8,000 Bosnian men and boys were killed.

The crime in Srebrenica is recognized as genocide by international courts.

On May 23, members of the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution declaring July 11 the International Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Srebrenica Genocide.

Appreciating the adoption of the United Nations resolution on July 11 as the International Day of Remembrance of the Srebrenica Genocide, the prime minister recalled that the Assembly of Kosovo has approved in July 2021 a special resolution condemning the Serbian genocide in Srebrenica. Kurt’s Office pointed out.

“Praising the adoption of the United Nations resolution on July 11 as the International Day of Remembrance of the Srebrenica Genocide, the prime minister recalled that the Assembly of Kosovo has approved in July 2021 a special resolution which condemns the Serbian genocide in Srebrenica”, emphasized Kurti’s Office.

Sulljagić expressed his “gratitude for the warm hospitality” that is being given to him in Kosovo, as well as reiterated the potential of cooperation between Kosovo and Bosnia and Herzegovina, the announcement states.

“At the meeting, the cooperation between the Institute for research and documentation of crimes committed during the war in Kosovo and the Srebrenica Memorial Center was evaluated and the memorandum of cooperation that is expected to be signed”, says the announcement.

Kurti emphasized “the Government’s commitment to comprehensive processes of transitional justice, as well as the finalization of the first Strategy of the Republic of Kosovo for Transitional Justice”.
