Sali Berisha will continue to be a “non-grata” person in Great Britain. The appeal in London decided to dismiss the former prime minister’s lawsuit to lift the travel ban to this country.

After this decision, Berisha will continue to find it impossible to enter this country. The reasons for this decision are from corruption, interference in elections as well as the investigation of Fazllic.

Through a statement to the media, Berisha says that the path of justice that will continue will serve the truth and will hit transnational corruption in a deserved way.

The journalist of Euronews Albania, Eksiola Shehu, made a chronological reflection of the legal battle of the former prime minister and the decisions taken.

After the decision of the US Department of State in May 2021, 14 months later, in July 2022, Great Britain declared Sali Berisha “non-grata”.

Berisha explained the charges in a conference held on July 22, 2022.

There were two accusations of Great Britain against the former prime minister:

  • Clear links to organized crime groups and criminals who have posed a risk to public safety in Albania and the UK and a willingness to use these links to advance political ambitions.
  • For corruption and enrichment of himself and the people around him. As an example, the former advisor for elections Damir Fazlliç is mentioned, who according to the assessment of the British was protected by Berisha when incriminating evidence came out against him.

On March 19 of this year, Berisha’s legal battle began in Great Britain against the declaration “non grata” initiated by him.

Berisha hired a law firm for this process.

Berisha’s lawsuit was brought against the Home Secretary at the time, Priti Patel, who banned his entry into the United Kingdom because of the allegations.

The British media write that this is the first legal challenge to a decision of the Home Secretary to expel a politician of “a friendly foreign country” from the United Kingdom.

Berisha declares that the accusations against him for connection with criminality and corruption are untrue.

Berisha’s lawsuit is dismissed.

The case was reviewed by the Special Board of Migration Appeals

Berisha has announced that he has filed a lawsuit in the French courts for the declaration of non grata by the USA, but since then there is no more information about the state of the process. He has been under house arrest since December 2023. There is an ongoing corruption investigation against him.
