In 2011, 2.83 million people lived in Albania. 13 years later, expectations are for a smaller population, but the real figure will be out in days.
The CENSUS, conducted in October 2023, was supposed to have a preliminary result at the end of the year, but the Institute of Statistics chose to change the calendar for the final figures, which prompted hints from the ranks of the opposition that only 1.5 million inhabitants remain within the borders, or 1.3 million less than 10 years ago.
Immigration, the aging of the population, the decrease in births and marriages at a late age are strong arguments for the shrinking of the population, but the figure is denied by the compilers of the CENSUS, which also the latest statistics that coincide with last year, report 2.76 million inhabitants, i.e. a reduction of 70 thousand inhabitants for a decade.
We remind you that CENSUS does not only measure demographics, but also provides detailed information on the number of properties, the economy, education, health, with statistics that serve the government and municipalities to plan public policies and programs aimed at improving the lives of citizens in the country.
In 2011, 1% of the population or 29 thousand residents refused to be surveyed, while in 2023 the refusals were at lower levels.
