The Prime Minister of Greece, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, has warned North Macedonia that Greece will block the integration processes in NATO and the EU if the name change agreement is not respected.
Mitsotakis made the statements during an interview for the local media, where he warned high officials in North Macedonia that they will refer to the country as North Macedonia and not “Macedonia”, as they will face consequences.
Among other things, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis mentioned the Prespa Agreement and the position of North Macedonia in an interview with Real FM 97.8.
As he emphasized, the situation cannot continue like this by not respecting the name agreement and warned that he will raise this issue at the NATO Summit in New York.
“We cannot continue like this. The Prime Minister of North Macedonia will find himself in an uncomfortable position within the NATO Summit. I will raise the issue there. Skopje will understand that it cannot play with Greece in this matter. Because if the country accepted a dual name, the matter would have been closed years ago. If it is questioned, Skopje will have problems both in NATO and in the EU, where it hopes to become a member”, stressed Mitsotakis.
“The Prime Minister of North Macedonia will find himself in an uncomfortable position if he insists on this rhetoric,” continued Mitsotakis.
At the same time, he also referred to the issues of Greek-Turkish relations, stressing that the good cooperation climate that exists is a positive step, even though, as he said, “the essence of Turkish politics does not change in a day”.
