Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić announced on Monday that he and the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Serbia, Aleksandar Bocan-Harchenko, have agreed for both states to jointly commemorate the anniversary of the liberation of Belgrade.
“We have agreed to jointly commemorate the 80th anniversary of the victory over fascism and the liberation of Belgrade. We discussed topics of mutual interest, especially in areas such as trade, culture, and regional security,” Vučić said in an Instagram post after the meeting with the Russian ambassador.
He also mentioned discussing with Bocan-Harchenko about “the current situation in the country and the region”.
The anniversary of the liberation of Belgrade from German occupation is marked on October 20th.
The capital of Serbia was liberated then by Yugoslav partisans and the Soviet Red Army.
On the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Belgrade, celebrated in 2014, Russian President Vladimir Putin participated.
Serbia is one of the few countries in Europe that has not imposed sanctions on Russia for its involvement in the conflict in Ukraine, which began in February 2022.
In some instances, official Belgrade has condemned the aggression and violation of Ukraine’s territorial integrity, but continues to cultivate warm relations with Moscow.
