The Ethnographic Museum of Elbasan, Monument of the first category and the only one of this nature in this region, is expected to undergo a complete reconstruction which aims to improve the conditions in which it is located.
The monument in question is a typical Elbasan 2-story building with a hall and a porch, according to the documents, it once served as the Sejdins’ Residence, today half of it has been turned into the Ethnographic Museum of the city of Elbasan and is administered by the Elbasan Municipality.
The main entrance of the Museum is oriented to the west along with the garden with trees and flowers. The ceilings and floor of the first floor are of carved wood and there are windows on each facade. The monument is located in the center of Elbasan city, on the eastern side of “Aqif Pasha” square. The building is built on a flat ground and dates from the century. XVIII.
The municipality is currently procuring the supervision part of the works for this contract, which aims at the complete restoration of this Monument. The increase in tourist flows seems to be directing more and more attention to the completion of the regional offer in various regions of the country, including Elbasan.
In the architectural description, it is clarified that the first floor has a large corridor and 4 visitable rooms. The middle floor is made of wood laid with planks.
“The ceilings are all decorated with different motifs from each other. In this building, the wooden wall decorations stand out as well as the frescoes on the inner walls, which shows that its inhabitants once represented a rich and high-level family of the city. All rooms have abundant lighting, wooden windows and wooden shutters. The men’s and women’s lounges are separate and have fireplaces.
In the premises, a typical furnishing of the period when the building served as a residence was realized. Of particular value in the museum is the fund of products and clothing decorated by hand. On the western side, there are also two rooms with an internal corridor that communicate with the gazebo, which today serve as an archive and warehouse,” the procedure documents state.
Official data shows an increase in interest in cultural monuments and forts in the country in recent years. In January-July 2024, over 651.7 visitors were registered during January-July 2024 to cultural sites in the country, an increase of 42% compared to the same period last year, where 23% of visitors are foreign tourists.
