The American envoy for the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina during the administration of former President Donald Trump, Richard Grenell, has said that the future of Serbia lies with the United States, and not with China and Russia, reports the Voice of America.
He believes that there is a sincere friendship between the USA and Serbia, regardless of who is in power.
“I regularly talk to the president of [Serbia, Aleksandar) Vucic and tell him that he should break away from Russia and China and get closer to the West and the US. As an American, I often give such advice and do not hesitate to promote Western values,” said Grenell.
Grenell was among the guests at the reception “Serbia beyond the future”, which the Permanent Mission of Serbia to the UN organized in New York.
The former official of the Trump administration has remained close to the representatives of the government in Serbia even after leaving office.
The President of Serbia presented him with a state decoration in October 2023 and on that occasion assessed that Grenell’s role in the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina “has not only contributed to regional peace and stability, but has also played a key role in strengthening of relations between the USA and Serbia”.
When asked by journalists about the current situation in Kosovo, the former official, who is still active in Donald Trump’s campaign, criticized the administration of the current US president Joe Biden.
“I am very disappointed that all the good work that President Trump has done in the region has been dismissed,” he said.
According to the report of the Voice of America, due to the intervention of the press service of the president of Serbia, Grenell did not answer the question of this medium about the investment of Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, in the building of the former General Staff in Belgrade.
Serbia has signed a contract with Kushner’s firm for the “revitalization” of the General Staff complex in downtown Belgrade, which was partially destroyed during the NATO bombing in 1999.
The former Trump administration official has often spoken publicly with praise for Trump’s son-in-law’s project in Belgrade.
Grenell, among other things, estimated that the building of the former General Staff in Belgrade, which is a symbol of the conflict, can be transformed into a bridge of friendship between Serbia and the USA.
On the site of the ruins from the bombing, the construction of two high-rise buildings with apartments and hotels is planned, although this object, built between 1955 and 1965, has not been removed from the status of cultural property protection.
