The Cold War Museum in Gjirokastra remains one of the most visited tourist attractions for 2024. Only in the first 10 months of the year, 25,000 local and foreign visitors have shown interest in this museum, which operates in the concrete war shelter, of built in the early 70s”.
“Especially for the part of September, there has been a higher visitation than last year, we can almost say double, the visitors are mainly from different countries, mostly they are Spanish, Italian, but we have also had the frequency of Belgians who have been increasing this year year, the Germans, the English have a variety of visitors”, said Olsi Sinani.
But what attracts tourists the most?
“It attracts them, they want to know more about the history of what happened during that period here and they like the tunnel the most because the objects inside are original, they have remained the same as they were 20-30 years ago” Olsi Sinani said.
“We come from Spain, we were very interested in visiting this concrete tunnel, a relic of the Cold War, it is special as a museum, I liked it a lot because it is a piece of history from that period”, said a tourist.
The tunnel where the museum is located is about 800 meters long.
A number of spaces have been built in its interior, which would serve to accommodate the former local communist leadership of those years in case of an eventual attack from outside. The shelter consists of 80 rooms, meeting rooms, work and rest areas, and part of it is also a warehouse for the supply of drinking water, the power plant, etc.
