The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, is against the continuation of the Rama-Meloni agreement for migrants and the establishment of this model in other countries. In an interview with Euractiv, he said that a repetition would raise human rights concerns.

“If repatriation centers similar to those in Albania can be built in other countries of the Western Balkans, how can we ensure that the rights of imprisoned individuals are respected”?

Kurti raised this question, stressing that these centers will weigh “on the conscience of the citizens of the Balkans and those of the European Union”.

The Rama-Meloni Pact has not been opposed in the EU, at least by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. But, it took a turn, when an Italian court ordered the return of African migrants from Albania, only after two days of stay.

“Temporary acceptance of refugees if the emergency requires it is, of course, always possible. For example, the shelter of Afghan citizens in the Balkans, when the Taliban took power, but this has no resemblance to the model we are discussing. We are talking about human beings who should be taken care of”, said Kurti.
