The National Assembly of the Albanian Language was held this Thursday in the premises of the Prime Minister’s Office, where Albanian academics and linguists from the entire region participated. In his speech, Prime Minister Edi Rama said that the Albanian language will survive the challenges of this century and the influence of social networks. He even added that very soon Albanian will be an official language in the European Union.
“There is still hope that the Albanian language will survive the challenges of this century, which threaten languages as a whole and the roots of humanity in general. Very soon it will also be an official language in the EU, where, if not the most ancient language of the European nations, it will rank among the rarest and most special among them. I want to say that this Assembly also comes as a product of the Third Diaspora Summit held in Tirana in November last year, where Albanian was one of the main topics and from which we came out together with the community with some conclusions and made some commitments Rama said.
The Prime Minister announced that on Friday, November 22, which coincides with Alphabet Day, the draft of the updated dictionary of the Albanian language will be published. According to the head of government, the draft will be submitted to public consultation to receive valuable opinions that can improve it.
Rama said that it is the duty of the academics to protect the Albanian language from the delirious, who appear on social networks and throw out false hypotheses.
“We are at a historic moment as far as the language is concerned, with the presentation of the Great Dictionary of the Albanian Language, which after half a century is being updated thanks to the monumental work done under the auspices of the Academy of Sciences, with the participation of academics and linguists from Albania, Kosovo and North Macedonia. The draft of this dictionary will be presented tomorrow; say draft as the dictionary will be put to a public consultation and all those opinions, suggestions and remarks will be received that can enrich it, but will certainly consolidate it as a common product of a resistance. We cannot be on the offensive, as we are under the aggression of barbarism and all kinds of ignorant delirious people who find space through social networks, but we have an obligation to be on the defensive and we have an obligation that the language does not degrade to the point of non-return,” said Rama.
