More than 9 million medical visits were performed by doctors in 2023.
The latest report published by INSTAT has highlighted that the needs for medical consultations have been higher from one year to the next, causing the number of visits to the family doctor or emergency hospitals to increase by 9.6% compared to the year 2022.
Statistically, an Albanian citizen has visited the doctor more than 3 times during a year. 41.5% of visits were made in health centers, 23.2% in ambulances and 35.2% in polyclinics.
During the last 5 years, almost the same distribution in the number of visits is observed. People over 60 account for about 35% of visits. Parallel to the number of visits increasing by 1.8%, surgical interventions have also come.
In 2023, 285,594 patients were hospitalized, of which 65,043 underwent operations, about 50% of them were performed by the surgery service, followed by obstetrics, ophthalmology and trauma.
During 2023, the average days a patient stayed in the hospital was 4.8 days. There are currently 67 hospitals in the country, of which 43 are public and 24 are private.
