Albania has not been affected by the climate changes that the world is experiencing during the last decades, but it is endangered by the pollution caused by other countries.  To further develop this program, Albanian country will integrate a new system in the hydrometeorology service.

A new program, supported by the German and Swiss governments, aims to support Albania in improving the hydrometeorology service. This project will develop the infrastructure for early warning and the implementation of measures to save lives.

“We set up a monitoring system, which is done through Civil Aviation. Albanian Civil Aviation has managed to raise such capacities through, of course, innovation, using services that are offered for a fee by different companies with satellite coverage, to start and anticipate mainly for the needs of Rinas airport, air navigation or other Civil Aviation units. Seeing that this product was really of high quality and quite close to what actually happened on the ground, we decided to use it in all structures and in all critical infrastructures that are covered by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy. This happened on the exact day when the northern axis called the Tirana-Shkodra highway, but in fact it was about the part from Thumana to the exit of Lezha, was covered by a snowstorm, completely blocking movement on it”, said Minister of Infrastructure and Energy and Deputy Prime Minister Belinda Balluku.

Regarding the climate changes that the planet is experiencing today, Balluku said that Albania has not made an impact.

“Government, municipalities, civil emergencies, we have not contributed to climate change, because we have a system that produces 100% renewable energy, we have an underdeveloped industry, and the fact is that we have not contributed to the extreme climate change that we are seeing everywhere. But we do not have the ability to protect our country in isolation. Albania is not a contributor to climate change. But today, if neighboring Italy is regularly flooded, how will we save Albania? Of course, we are the most innocent of the whole group, but we will pay the bill like everyone else,” said Balluku.

The AlbAdapt project is supported by the Green Climate Fund with a funding of 35 million euros.
