A global happiness index report ranked Albanian retirees 100 out of 143 countries in the world. In the age group over 60, Albania left behind only African countries.
Research showed that social and economic factors influenced their unhappiness.
It seems that this report is in sync with what the retirees themselves claim. In Saranda, the elderly say that their life is not easy, and that at their tables, conversations about problems and concerns prevail.
“Pensions are very low, I have something good, I can’t say I can’t complain, I postpone the month with what I have, but it’s a black life. We discuss these issues, we only discuss issues, we have nothing certain…”
“We are sick of injustice, because there is a lot of injustice, it is known that poverty is for everyone. In the third age, they left us on the streets, no one will know, that in the third age we gave a lot for this country, we have spared nothing. They are not raising our pension, they gave us five lek now, supposedly as if they helped us, but nothing is happening to us.”
In addition to the money that they have to manage carefully, in order to make ends meet, the elderly in Saranda list as an important factor in their unhappiness the children leaving and the lack of socialization
“In Albania, the time has come when there is only trouble, we are bored by everything that people are alone. Pensioners do not see their children, they are all worried. ”
“We want to have more love, because money comes and goes, we want more love, more respect as we were at that time. We used to greet each other in the morning, today no one will even know us, this annoys us even more.”
Albanian pensioners almost live in poverty, due to low income, and away from children due to emigration.
