US Chargé d’Affaires, Nancy VanHorn, stated this Monday that a healthy opposition in Albania is important for a vibrant democracy. Through a message shared on the website of the US Embassy in social networks, VanHorn emphasized that criticism and engagement of the opposition are part of a necessary democratic process.
She also added that she held meetings with representatives of the Democratic Party of Albania, while she emphasized that the position of the USA has not changed in terms of cooperation with individuals who have been declared non-grata.
This reaction of the American Embassy comes after several meetings that took place during the past week, where sources report that the opposition MPs raised numerous concerns regarding the elections and the use of power. They criticized the influence of organized crime in the electoral process, the limited space for the opposition in the Assembly, the usurpation of legislative spaces and the independence of institutions, especially justice.
Also, they requested the formation of a Technical Government to address these concerns. Important figures of the opposition participated in these meetings.
Jorida Tabaku, Tomorr Alizoti, Helidon Bushati, Oerd Bylykbashi, Kreshnik Çollaku were some of the deputies who were present at the meeting.
