The Times newspaper has published a letter that a group of British MPs and politicians from allied countries, including Lulzim Basha, the CoE Rapporteur on the reconstruction of Ukraine, where they have asked the UK government to transfer the frozen Russian assets to Ukraine.

In a letter published in The Times, they point out that such action would send a clear message that aggressors must and will pay for their actions, serving as a deterrent to future conflicts.

MPs argue that this is a moral, strategic and legal measure, which is vital and feasible. They underline that the loans and emergency funds granted so far are not enough. The transfer of these frozen assets would ensure that the financial burden of the war fell on Russia rather than on Western taxpayers. The UK’s position as a major financial services center makes it well suited to lead this initiative.

The request comes ahead of a parliamentary debate on the issue, indicating there is growing momentum within the British government to consider such measures. The initiative has received support from high-ranking parliamentarians from several allied countries, reflecting international interest in holding Russia financially accountable for its actions in Ukraine.
