The headache was the sign that alerted a 34-year-old woman, who immediately went to the doctor to find out its cause.
“A resonance is performed and there is a miracle, a tumor appears, with a tumor 3 cm by 2 cm above the nasal cavity but inside the head, adjacent to the olfactory nerves and near the optic nerves, its name is meningioma, it is a benign tumor. it is more frequent in women, but the problem is that it increases”, – Artur Djumari head of neurosurgery, QSUNT (University Hospital Centre “Mother Teresa” in Tirana).
The young woman has undergone the intervention to remove the tumor, with a new technique and very beneficial for the patient.
“The special thing about this is that the classic way of cutting was not used, but removing it from the eyebrow. Which brings quick recovery, minimal pain and most importantly the removal of the tumor”, said Artur Jumari, head of neurosurgery, QSUNT.
The head of neurosurgery explains that Meningioma is a tumor that if it is completely removed, the risk of recurrence is very small, but the time when it is detected remains a problem.
“The bad thing about this tumor in this country is that when it gives the signs, it gives them very late. So 3 cm is a big size, but more often we see 5 or 6 cm, but if it becomes 6 cm, it comes with bigger marks than that, stays in bed, sits as if confused, urinates unconsciously, goes out naked. In such cases it is too late to hope for improvement”, said the head of surgery.
Only in the neurosurgery service at QSUNT (University Hospital Centre “Mother Teresa” in Tirana), about 2000 operations are performed annually, of which half are meningioma and brain cancer. The doctors of this service started the year 2025 with an urgent intervention to remove the tumor in a 5-year-old child, who, thanks to the timely intervention, has already left the hospital in good health.
