The Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, has declared that the centers for the reception of immigrants in Albania are ready for operation.

Commenting on the issue at an annual press conference, Meloni stressed that despite temporary setbacks, the plan remains a priority for her government. She assured that the scheme will be implemented once the legal issues are addressed.

Meloni emphasized that the Supreme Court of Cassation has given the Italian government the authority to determine safe places for immigrants.

“As far as we are concerned, the centers in Albania are ready to function. Thankfully, last year landings decreased by 60% and in recent days they have almost disappeared. But the centers are ready to be activated,” declared Meloni.

She added that the EU Court of Justice is expected to review the case in February, while most EU member states have expressed support for the plan.

The agreement for these centers was reached last year between Meloni and the Prime Minister, Edi Rama, providing for the transfer to Albania of irregular immigrants who arrive in Italy. According to Meloni, this plan is intended to discourage the departure of immigrants from Africa to Italian shores.
