Elbasan has marked a significant increase in cases of domestic violence. Over the past four years, over 500 requests for protection orders have been filed with the court.
In 2024 alone, 168 requests for protection orders were registered, of which 115 were accepted.
Psychologists point out that the increase in violence after the pandemic is worrying, and the contributing factors are numerous, while the main causes remain economic, mentality and strained family relationships.
“After the pandemic, we have seen a doubling of cases of domestic violence. The causes are different, but the economy, mentality and relationships in the family remain the main factors that influence this phenomenon”, says psychologist Mirela Gjoni.
Another worrying aspect is the murder of 17 women during the year 2024 by partners, ex-partners or relatives. Psychologists consider this as an important alarm for Albanian society, emphasizing the need for stronger preventive measures and support for victims.
“From January until now, 17 women have been killed by their husbands, ex-husbands or intimate partners. This is a worrying number and shows a worsening of domestic violence. Although the institutions have taken some measures, it is necessary that they be accompanied by financial support and sufficient resources”, says psychologist Mirela Gjoni.
A strong appeal also comes from the leader of the Elbasan Women’s Forum, Shpresa Banja, who underlines the importance of denouncing violence and not tolerating it.
“Domestic violence is no longer a civil but a criminal offense, and for this reason, people should think twice before using violence. The law provides for up to 5 years in prison for anyone who commits violence. I call on all women and girls not to tolerate violence, but to denounce it” says Shpresa Banja, Director of the Elbasan Women’s Forum.
Specialists who work with this cause every day emphasize that, despite the high number of cases, there has been a significant increase in women’s awareness and sensitization to denounce violence.
This situation requires a concerted commitment of institutions and society to prevent domestic violence and to protect the victims.
