The registration rates of emigrants wishing to vote in the May 11, 2025, elections have been notably high in the first 10 days, with 49,000 applications submitted by midday Tuesday.
Of this total, around 23,000 have been registered so far, while a significant number of applications are still under review. Many have been rejected due to irregularities in documentation or incorrect addresses provided by emigrants in the system.
Based on a projection calculated by the Euronews Albania Barometer, if this registration process continues at the same pace, the number of registered emigrants could reach 200,000.
This figure would represent approximately 15% of the electorate, based on participation in the 2021 elections, where about 1.6 million Albanians voted in the April 25 process.
In terms of costs, these elections are set to be the most expensive in Albania’s history due to the inclusion of diaspora voting. Once the postal service provider is selected and the total number of registered voters is determined by March 4, the final calculation of the electoral operation’s cost for May 11 can be made.
Changes to the Electoral Code are expected, including an earlier registration deadline for parliamentary candidates to allow for quicker ballot production. This could potentially reduce postal expenses.
