The European Union’s chief diplomat, Kaja Kallas, stated that the full normalization of relations between Kosovo and Serbia is the “only path” for these countries to join the bloc.
In a post on Twitter, Kallas, who mediates the dialogue, welcomed the appointment of Peter Sorensen as the EU’s special envoy for Kosovo-Serbia dialogue.
In the past, the EU has also emphasized that the path of both parties toward the bloc is conditioned on the normalization of relations.
Sorensen began his mandate on February 1, after receiving confirmation from the EU’s Foreign Ministers and ambassadors. He replaces Miroslav Lajčák in this role.
“Thank you, Miroslav Lajčák, for your efforts. The work done will serve as a foundation for re-engagement,” Kallas wrote on X.
The Danish diplomat, Sorensen, will focus solely on the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue and not on broader regional Balkan issues, unlike his predecessor.
The dialogue process began in 2011 with the goal of achieving full normalization of relations. Kosovo insists that a final agreement must include mutual recognition, while Serbia seeks a compromise where neither side would be an absolute winner or loser.
