“We are closely following the latest developments regarding the investigation into the Mayor of Tirana. However, the EU does not comment on ongoing judicial proceedings.
Justice sector reform and the strengthening of the rule of law in Albania are key elements in the country’s EU accession process.
The EU remains fully committed to supporting Albania’s efforts in pursuing these reforms and assisting the country in consolidating the efficiency, independence, accountability, and professionalism of its institutions, as well as ensuring their compliance with EU standards, both in the law enforcement sector and in the judiciary.
The specific role of the Special Anti-Corruption and Organized Crime Structure (SPAK) and its independence in investigating, prosecuting, and adjudicating complex corruption cases, without any attempts at political interference or undue pressure, are of fundamental importance for the consolidation of the rule of law in Albania,” the EU statement reads.
