Over 58 tons of toxic waste have been seized at the port of Ancona. The waste was generated by the operations of two Italian companies based in Lombardy and was being illegally imported from Albania. The legal representatives of the involved companies have been charged with serious environmental crimes.
The seizure took place after authorities discovered discrepancies in the documentation that allowed the shipment to pass.
The waste contains aluminum and a high concentration of other toxic metals, including zinc, lead, and copper.
These substances are highly dangerous if they come into contact with aquatic environments and can severely damage the ecosystem if dumped or disposed of improperly.
This is not the first time Albania has been linked to a toxic waste scandal. A separate investigation is ongoing by the Durrës Prosecution Office regarding 102 containers of toxic waste, which were shipped from the Port of Durrës with Thailand as their final destination.
