The leader of the Democratic Party (PD), Sali Berisha, held a press conference this Thursday, where one of the main topics was the government’s decision to ban TikTok for a year. Berisha strongly opposed the decision, calling it an act of censorship.
In response, Berisha called on young people across the country to join a national protest to overturn what he describes as a government-imposed restriction on free speech.
“The government has announced a decision to ban TikTok for 12 months, an act of censorship against over one million users in Albania. With this move, Rama aligns Albania with Afghanistan and Iran.
This is a blatant attack on free thought and expression. TikTok is a communication platform that is widely popular among young people in Albania and around the world. Claiming to move toward Europe while enforcing such a ban is a monstrous act against free speech and proves that Albania’s European journey is mere hypocrisy for Rama.
Based on this, I call on high school students, young people, and citizens to start the fight to liberate TikTok. On March 15, we will hold a nationwide protest at Skanderbeg Square, in front of the Prime Minister’s Office. This protest demands the immediate annulment of the decision to censor and block TikTok. I urge young people and parents not to fall victim to Rama’s deception,” declared Berisha.
