In Albania, 2.6 tons of contaminated chicken meat have been identified as having been consumed by citizens, prompting experts to urge greater caution in cooking meat products properly.
Salmonella infection can cause diarrhea, vomiting, fever, and a range of other symptoms, especially if medical treatment is not sought in time.
“Some cases may present symptoms like blood in the stool, fever, abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting, and even dehydration. When there is no fever, symptoms can be managed by drinking fluids. However, if the condition persists, both children and adults should visit their family doctor for a more detailed examination. Salmonella-related problems typically appear within 6 to 72 hours after consuming contaminated food. If symptoms worsen or do not subside within a few days, it is important to seek medical attention—especially in cases of severe dehydration, bleeding in the stool, or prolonged high fever. To confirm salmonella poisoning, doctors usually perform a stool culture analysis,” explains nutritionist Albana Daka.
According to experts, the most at-risk groups include:
- The elderly
- Individuals with a weakened immune system
- Children, who are more prone to developing bacterial gastrointestinal infections
“If we have a strong immune system, symptoms may be milder and easier to manage. However, in some cases, the infection can last for several days,” Daka adds.
Experts emphasize the importance of thoroughly cooking meat products at safe temperatures to eliminate harmful bacteria and reduce the risk of foodborne illness.
