The President of the Republic, Bajram Begaj, through his press office, has reacted to the suspension of elections in Tirana following the dismissal of Erion Veliaj.
In the statement, the Presidency emphasized that President Begaj respects the decision of the Constitutional Court.
“In response to media inquiries, we inform you that the Institution of the President of the Republic respects the decision of the Constitutional Court to suspend the part of Decree No. 350, dated 01.10.2025, which sets the date for local elections in the Municipality of Tirana,” the statement reads.
The Constitutional Court, on Thursday, suspended President Bajram Begaj’s decree for partial local elections in Tirana scheduled for November 9.
The Court decided to refer the case — submitted by Erion Veliaj — to a public plenary session on October 31, and to suspend the decree in the section that sets the election date for the Municipality of Tirana.
Erion Veliaj’s lawyers filed two appeals with the Constitutional Court: the first to overturn the government’s decision to dismiss him, and the second following President Begaj’s decree that set November 9 as the date for partial elections, which also included Tirana.
