The social issue of domestic violence in Gjirokastër is showing an upward trend.
According to local police, 16 cases of domestic violence have been recorded this year — with 3 people arrested, 13 prosecuted while at liberty, and 33 requests for protection orders filed.

The increase in domestic violence cases has also led to a rise in requests for psychological services and legal assistance.

“The Legal Aid Center of the Primary Service in Gjirokastër has handled several domestic violence cases, most of which were referred by the Gjirokastër Municipality, the domestic violence sector, or citizens who filed requests for protection orders and were assisted by us,” said Klaudja Veizaj from the Free Legal Aid Center.

The phenomenon remains concerning and requires the involvement of social actors and public institutions to address the root causes of domestic violence.

“Most cases involve violence between spouses, but there have also been other family conflicts between siblings. Limited economic opportunities for citizens, as well as emigration, have also been contributing factors,” added Veizaj.

Thanks to greater awareness and public sensitization, the number of reports to social and law enforcement structures for legal prosecution of domestic violence perpetrators has been increasing.
