The Swedish Ambassador, Niklas Ström, visited the city of Pogradec this Wednesday, where he also held a meeting with the mayor, Ilir Xhakolli. Ström emphasized that during the meeting with Xhakolli, they discussed Albania’s EU integration journey and the opening of the negotiating chapters. He also expressed Sweden’s support for Albania.
“I am happy to be here in Pogradec, a very beautiful city and an important part of Albania. I just met with the mayor; we talked about the EU chapters for Albania and the work that municipalities need to do.
Sweden supports Albania, both the local and central government. Today we are happy to present a Swedish film; it is important to strengthen mutual understanding,” he said.
The ambassador added that Albania’s progress has been fantastic and that the country has strong ambitions regarding its EU path.
“Progress has been fantastic so far. Sweden is interested in seeing Albania in the EU. Albania has ambition, and we are ready to support it. It is up to Albania to fulfill and carry out the necessary reforms,” the ambassador said.
Asked whether he sees Albania as a “Trojan horse” for EU democratic standards, the ambassador responded that Albania is making progress.
“I do not use that terminology; I don’t know what you mean by it, but we are working with Albania on several negotiating chapters, and it is important for Albania to continue progressing,” he said.
Regarding the gender equality law, he emphasized that Sweden does the same, believing in gender equality.
“Parliament has approved that law. I think what is important is to believe in gender equality, and in Sweden, we do the same,” he replied.
