Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Wednesday commented on the revision of the EU migration system, agreed by European interior ministers this week.
This revision, among other things, aims to facilitate the implementation of Italy’s controversial plan to manage migrants in reception centers outside Italian territory, including Albania, after legal obstacles that have so far hindered the serious launch of this program.
The changes, which complement the Migration and Asylum Pact adopted in 2024, include expanded deportation measures and legally allow the establishment of “return centers” for rejected asylum seekers outside the country, provided that they meet specific safety criteria for migrants.
“Italy has worked to propose innovative solutions that are now being viewed with increasing interest and are becoming common practice,” Meloni said at the International Conference of the Global Alliance against Migrant Smuggling.
“I am referring mainly to the Albania Protocol. Processing asylum requests and returns outside the EU but under European jurisdiction — this model is part of the path being followed at the European level,” she said.
Meloni was referring to the agreement reached last Monday in the EU Council of Home Affairs on the new repatriation regulation.
