An Albanian inmate lost his life this Monday inside the high-security prison of Korydallos Prison in Greece. The Albanian national, identified as Jani Aliaj, is reported to have died from stab wounds inflicted by another prisoner.

According to Greek media, the incident occurred in the third wing of the prison, under circumstances that remain unclear. The victim died from injuries caused by a sharp, improvised weapon used during the attack by another inmate of Greek nationality.

Jani Aliaj was serving a life sentence imposed by the Albanian judiciary for the revenge killing of Elton Çiço, an incident that took place on May 1, 2016, in the former Blloku area of Tirana.

Official sources state that both the victim and the perpetrator were convicted of serious crimes, including murder, making this incident a clash between two highly dangerous criminals. So far, it is unknown whether the motive was a previous conflict, revenge, or the difficult conditions of detention.

Greek media report that the alleged perpetrator had previously been convicted for the murder of an Albanian citizen on the street in the Agios Panteleimonas area last summer. He is suspected of being the person who killed 47-year-old Albanian national Artur Bashimi.

The 27-year-old suspect, known as a drug user, had stated after his arrest that he had agreed to carry out the killing for a sum of €15,000. Today, he is suspected of having taken the life of another Albanian citizen.
