Abuses involving public funds cost the state budget around €24 million in the first nine months of last year, according to the latest report by (KLSH) Albania’s Supreme State Audit Institution.
The report states that approximately €24 million in economic damage resulted from ineffective management of public funds identified during audits carried out over eight months of the past year. It notes that during the period January–August 2025, KLSH issued 148 recommendations related to “findings with negative effects on the state budget.”
Economic damage to the state budget was identified as 60 percent in expenditures and 40 percent in revenues.
“In the area of expenditures, the largest share consists of violations identified during public procurement procedures and the implementation of contracts. Meanwhile, in the area of revenues, the largest share concerns income from customs activities, due to the failure to collect customs obligations, non-payment of customs duties, unjustified exemptions from VAT, and incorrect handling of customs violations.
In addition, problems were identified in missing revenues from the management of state property and contractual relations with third parties, amounting to 1.47 million lekë,” KLSH said.
