The British Embassy in Tirana issued a statement this Thursday shortly before the start of the plenary session to review the immunity of Belinda Balluku.

In its message, the embassy said that the independence of the judiciary must be preserved and emphasized that parliamentary immunity should protect democratic processes.

“The British Embassy stresses the importance of safeguarding the rule of law and judicial independence, and recognizes Albania’s progress in judicial reform since 2016, including the creation of SPAK.

The Executive, the Judiciary, and the Legislature remain equal partners in supporting this progress as part of Albania’s goal of achieving EU membership.

While parliamentary immunity should protect democratic processes, it should not be an obstacle to equal accountability before the law,” the statement said.
