The head of the Socialist Party (SP) parliamentary group, Taulant Balla, reacted after the Democratic Party (PD) parliamentary group decided to boycott Tuesday’s parliamentary session, which they described as illegal.
In a Facebook post, Balla said he regrets that the PD will not take part in the session where Parliament is expected to vote on the SP resolution declaring Iran a state that uses terrorist means.
Referring to PD’s claim that the session was called for Prime Minister Edi Rama’s personal agenda, Balla stated that Albania’s position alongside the United States against Iran’s terrorist actions is not a personal agenda.
“It is regrettable to hear that the Parliamentary Group of the Democratic Party will boycott tomorrow’s session of the Albanian Parliament, under the pretext that during this session we have proposed a draft resolution ‘On declaring the Islamic Republic of Iran a State Sponsor of Terrorism and a State that uses terrorist means.’
According to them, the immediate need for Albania to take a stance alongside the United States against Iran’s terrorist actions is supposedly a personal agenda. Do you seriously believe this, or should we understand it as a slip of the tongue?
Tonight I can say that the explanations of why this resolution is urgent will be provided tomorrow at the Conference of Chairpersons, and we hope that until tomorrow you still have time to reconsider.
It has also been claimed that the session was called in violation of the Rules of Procedure. That is a lie. Tomorrow’s session, on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, was proposed at the Conference of Chairpersons on February 18, 2026, and approved by a decision of the Plenary Session, therefore one month ago (refer to the minutes of the Conference of Chairpersons meeting, which are public).
Whoever has ordered you to boycott tomorrow’s session clearly does not wish well for you or for Albania,” Balla said.
