While schools are often seen as places of conflict or misuse of technology, there is another reality: students who use technology to create projects that contribute to the community.

This was demonstrated at the annual science festival, where high school students from Pogradec presented innovative ideas covering various fields: environmental protection, the concept of smart schools, earthquake early warning systems, and applications dedicated to children on the autism spectrum.

Students shared some of their projects:

“This project aims to provide a sustainable solution to the pollution of Lake Ohrid. The Verdova River pollutes the lake’s waters with 25–50 tons of inert materials per year. We aim to implement the project across the entire lake, not only at the river mouth.”

“Our work monitors light intensity, temperature, and safety. The automatic lighting system saves energy, while the application we created for the school allows us to track absences and manage resources.”

“Our project focuses on reducing heavy metals and using them in different ways. In the village of Buçimas, this project could be useful, as there are large areas suitable for plant cultivation.”

“We aim to help families with children with autism by providing information, educational games, and activities that enhance children’s progress. The goal is more than just an hour of therapy – it is improving their quality of life.”

At a time when news about how teenagers are growing up is often not positive, this scientific ideas competition shows that when young people are supported, they can bring tangible and meaningful changes to the community.
