Matteo Messina Denaro was captured by the carabinieri in Italy a few days ago after more than 30 years on the run.

Journalist Artan Hoxha said during his appearance on Euronews Albania’s ‘NOW with Erla Mehilli’ that Denaro, for the most part, was wanted by the military services as characters like him influence the socio-economic life of the country.

The way they escorted him, by a female carabinieri on the one side and a male carabinieri on the other side, goes to show, according to Hoxha, that it was actually an act of self-surrender and that it was a somewhat funny scene for a character that had turned into an ‘elusive myth’.

“The Italian anti-mafia is maintained by the best structures in the world against organized crime and when you are dealing with such people who have not moved from Sicily, they have been there this whole time, the question that arises is how is it possible that in a country with a capacity like Italy’s, he hadn’t been caught this whole time. For the most part, he had been searched by the military services because they are characters that influence the socio-economic life of the country. Even the way they accompanied him, with a female carabiner and another carabiner on the other side… in general, self-surrenders are comical scenes, especially if a character who has turned into an elusive myth is surrendered in this way,” said Hoxha.
