A survey conducted by the Institute of Statistics found that 53% of women have been abused at least once in their lives. The study shows some alarming findings according to which, a considerable part of society widely accepts the phenomenon of domestic violence, as something common in the Albanian family.
Another worrisome index is the 46.5% of participants, who believe that women should withstand the abuse in order to keep the family united.
Just as concerning is the statistic showing 27.5% of respondents, claiming that they believe that when a woman gets abused by her husband, it is her because of her own fault. In fact, data shows that 27.6% think that it is unacceptable and shameful, when a woman decides to speak up on this to someone outside of her close family.
The abuse suffered by women in many cases comes as a result of them refusing to have sexual intercourse with their husbands, as was admitted by 11.4% of respondents.
However, the highest index, is the one demonstrating that a staggering 52.9% of the women that were interviewed admit to have been exposed to abuse at least once in their lives, and 36.6% admit that they are currently experiencing it.
This study shows that controlling behavior, psychological abuse, economic and sexual abuse against the partner come up within the first 3 years of a marriage. In fact, the study also finds that the highest number of abusive partners are amongst the men, who have only completed high school or primary school.
Last year showed us that domestic violence rates soared, especially during the pandemic, whilst 13% of crimes in 2020 happened within the family.
