The European Commission, when asked about the adoption of Albania’s new Gender Equality Law, emphasized that this represents an important step in the country’s EU accession process.
In a statement to Euronews Albania, the Commission said it welcomes and supports the approval of this law.
“Alignment with the EU acquis is part of the accession process that all candidate countries must ensure.
This is not about personal or political agendas, but a fundamental step toward EU membership.
As Commissioner Kos highlighted in her social media post yesterday, ‘Gender equality and non-discrimination are integral parts of EU law.’
These are core EU values and fundamental rights.
We welcome the adoption of the Gender Equality Law by the Albanian Parliament last night.
This follows the recommendation made in the European Commission’s 2025 Annual Report on Albania, which called on the country to demonstrate a high level of ambition and ensure that the law is aligned with the EU acquis and European standards.
This is another sign of Albania’s commitment to implementing key reforms within the EU accession framework,” the European Commission’s statement reads.
