The recent crimes inside Korydallos Prison have put Greek authorities on alert, leading to a large-scale police operation.
A few days ago, life-sentenced inmate Jani Aliaj—accused in both Albania and Greece of serious crimes—was killed with an improvised cutting weapon made of glass while serving his sentence. Authorities later also reported an attempted murder against another Albanian national, who was injured.
According to the Greek media outlet Protothema, an operation was carried out in the early morning hours at Korydallos Prison by the Directorate for Combating Organized Crime.
The operation involved officers from the Narcotics Sub-Directorate, the Sub-Directorate for Crimes Against Life and Property, the Intelligence and Special Operations Sub-Directorate of D.A.O.E., as well as the Special Anti-Terrorist Unit (EKAM), with the support of a police dog.
During the checks, 10 cells and three areas of the Central Warehouse of Korydallos Prison were searched, and 31 inmates were inspected.
The Greek police (ELAS) announced that criminal charges were filed against two inmates found in possession of mobile phones, while their nationalities were not disclosed.
During the operation, authorities seized two packages of processed cannabis weighing a total of 2.75 grams, four mobile phones, one SIM card, and charging devices and cables.
The compiled case files will be submitted to the competent authorities in accordance with the law.
