The Minister of Defense, Niko Peleshi has recently released a statement saying that Albanian institutions are facing a daily surge of cybernetic attacks, with a good part of them coming from abroad.
In an interview for Euronews Albania, he linked these attacks with geostrategic interests in our region.
“We have been threatened and attacked on numerous occasions. It happens continuously, almost every single day,” said the defense minister.
But, who is targeting Albania through these cyber-attacks?
Defense Minister, Niko Peleshi states that “We are the only NATO country in the region, therefore we have rivals and competitors. There are certain interests aiming to destabilize our constitutional order and well as our defense system, with some of them, even simply testing us”.
Even the private sector has been affected by cyber-attacks.
“At risk, aren’t just our critical systems but also the private and public sectors. According to information from our Secret Intelligence Services, many private companies are being attacked by hackers coming from all over the world, as well as locally-based ones,” said Peleshi.
Does Albania have the appropriate capacities to protect itself against these kinds of attacks, or do we only rely on the support of our allies?
“Our capacities are still modest,” said the defense minister.
In order to face these computer-centric attacks, the Ministry of Defense and the United State have foreseen the establishment of a Unit for the Cybernetic Protection within this administration.
