Albania is ready to respond to special emergencies such as chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear ones.
Experts from the European Union and the center of excellence have already trained some of the staff, while the National Emergency has been equipped with all the tools to react in any situation.
“This project provided us with 220,000 euros of basic materials, all the uniforms to enter different areas, a decontamination tent in case of a chemical or biological accident, which are necessary for immediate intervention at the scene”, said Skënder Brataj, the director of the National Emergency.
For experts, strengthening this structure does not mean preparing for war.
“I don’t think we expect, nuclear, chemical or biological catastrophes, but human history has shown that they happen and the important thing is that we are prepared not only in response, but also have a network to quickly identify when they happen and prevent the number of cases and their spread”, said Mark Salter, expert of the EU Center of Excellence.
“Regarding these types of emergencies, it is a sector that we have had at this level, we always have the idea that when they happen, they happen in wars, how many storages of chemical substances do we have, how many transports do we have, how many manufacturers do we have which in every link can cause such accidents to the detriment of citizens”, said Brataj.
The first training that is taking place in the crossroads has gathered staff from regional hospitals, the Institute of Public Health, the Fire Department, while two delegations from Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina have also joined
