Less babies and more older people. This is the most prominent panorama in Albania over the last ten years and the ever-decreasing trend of births is not stopping.

Even 2023 started with fewer births compared to the previous year. According to the latest data from the Institute of Statistics, 5,164 births were registered in the first three months of the year, with the figure being 16.7% lower than the same period in 2022.

Birth rates have decreased throughout the entire country, but Lezha has scored the most sensitive decline. Only 215 babies were born in the district during these first three months, compared to 322 in 2022. Tirana remains the district with the largest number of births, while Gjirokastra falls last in the list.

Throughout the entirety of the previous year, 24,688 babies were born in Albania, marking a decrease of 9.3% compared to 2021. However, 2022 marked a positive natural increase in the population, with 690 births more than deaths, a trend that was reversed during the years of the pandemic, as a result of the high number of deaths reported from Covid-19.
