One of the most famous sports activities in the world of cycling, the Giro d’Italia, will start next year in Albania. The well-known race with a tradition of over 100 years has selected Albania as the destination for its 2025 launch, a historic development that is expected to attract the attention of millions of spectators around the world.
Prime Minister Edi Rama, present at the presentation conference of the “Giro d’Italia Grande Partenza”, described this event as an important moment for Albania, not only in terms of sports, but also in the international promotion of Albania.
“We have received confirmation that Albania has been chosen… I know that there are many choices for competing countries, but this is a tradition that has been going on for 15 years. I am happy that we have beaten many bigger ones. Also, to show you our wonderful country to 800 million spectators on 200 world televisions that broadcast the Giro d’Italia live”, said Rama.
The race will take place for three consecutive days in Tirana, Durrës and Vlora, gathering the greatest cycling champions from all over the world. This event, which extends beyond sports, for Rama is an opportunity to show Albania as a special destination on the global map.
“I have always said: Albania is a small Italy, and with this departure we are truly an Italy on the other side of the sea. This event is not only a sporting event, but a celebration where everyone is involved. For us it is the first time and I hope not the last. We will take care to do everything for the start of the race in 2026”, said the head of the government.
On May 9, 2025, the world’s best cyclists will compete for pole position, starting the route from Durrës, Tirana and Vlora. With a 114-year tradition, the Giro d’Italia brings not only the excitement of the race, but also an important step to present Albania in the international arena.
